Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods' wrath. Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence. I also liked the characters of Briseis and Thetis, Briseis being portrayed as a quiet, kind and shrewdly intelligent woman while Thetis is shown as cruel and frightening, fiercely protective of Achilles and disdainful towards Patroclus.Īll in all, The Song of Achilles is a poignant tale of passionate love, the thirst for glory and of inescapable destiny, and I think this is a must-read for all those who are or aren’t fans of Greek mythology retellings.Achilles, "the best of all the Greeks," son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong, swift, and beautiful – irresistible to all who meet him. The writing style is engaging and poetic and makes you really feel the characters’ hardships. The book gets more addictive as the story moves on and provides a rich narrative of the war and of the nature of society in those times. He is also revealed to have an innocent and mischievous side, and helps Patroclus open up as they grow closer, which endears them to the reader and makes us root for them. Achilles on the other hand is beautiful and irresistible, predicted to be the greatest warrior of their times and loved by all.

Patroclus is presented as an awkward and insecure prince, neglected by his father and banished into exile at a young age. The book starts off by describing their childhood and close friendship which I really enjoyed, as it presents a unique point of view not really tapped into by classics and epics. A rendering of the epic Trojan War, The Song of Achilles captures the beautiful relationship between Achilles and his companion Patroclus, from their childhood friendship to their passionate love and unwavering companionship later as they grow. To dive straight in, I want to say that I LOVED this book. Little do they know that the cruel Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. They are trained by the centaur Chiron in the arts of war and medicine, but when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name. Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods’ wrath. Achilles, “the best of all the Greeks,” son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong, swift, and beautiful, irresistible to all who meet him.
